How do Apprenticeships work?

As an employer you are expected to employ the Apprentice and pay the minimum apprenticeship wage set by the government. You will be required to give your employee on-the-job training which allows them to achieve a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)

How long does an Apprenticeship take?

The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual Apprentice. An Apprenticeship will usually take anything from 12 to 24 months and up to a further 18 months for Advanced Apprenticeship.

What qualifications will my Apprentice receive?

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), a Technical Certificate and Key Skills/Functional Skills qualifications.

Will my Apprentice be entitled to holiday pay?

Like your other employees they will receive at least 20< days holiday per year (and bank holidays). You will be required to give your Apprentice terms and conditions of employment.

How do I take on an Apprentice?

Tameside College Training provides a free Professional Recruitment Service our team of dedicated Training Co-ordinators manage a database of over 1,000 applicants, all aged from 16 to 24 years and living in the Greater Manchester area. All our registered young people have been interviewed and assessed by one of our Training Co-ordinators. Once we have received your vacancy details, we will advertise it in the vacancy section of the Colleges website, and also match your requirements against our database and select suitable candidates for you. What are my responsibilities as an employer?

Your support as an employer is vital; Apprenticeship programmes rely on good on the job training supported by off the job training in order to achieve their target qualifications such as NVQ's. You must be prepared to release your Apprentice for planned off the job training.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge to your business for the recruitment and training of young people who undertake an Apprenticeship Programme.
